Shockwaves could be the new treatment for erectile dysfunction

July 18, 2017

As unattractive as it might sound, this could be actually effective according to a new study.
Approximately half of men between the ages of 40 and 70 have experienced erectile dysfunction to a certain degree. Whether they’re unable to get an erection or if they have a difficult time trying to maintain one, it is estimated that at least one in every ten men suffer from some form of sex-related issues, regardless of age.
In spite of being such a common problem, the whole situation is still taboo and synonym of shame and inadequateness. Nevertheless, one must never lose hope, and so it seems that according to a new research, sending shock waves through the penis could be a successful treatment for ED problems.
Of course, for many men the idea of putting their penis through shock wave therapy might seem more like a nightmare than like a feasible solution, but apparently it’s not as bad as it sounds. The process consists of sending low acoustic sound waves through the penis, which stimulates the formation of new blood vessels that can produce an erection.
The research was carried out by scientists from  the Centre for Sexual and Reproductive Health at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in Greece. They studied 46 men suffering from erectile dysfunction, from which 30 received the treatment and 16 received a placebo. After performing the tests, they found the treatment to have a considerably beneficial impact on the ED patients that lasted up to a year when compared to the placebo. According to the results, 56.7% of the men felt improvements at one month, 63.3% of them at 6 months and 75% at 12 months.
Although the treatment is not available yet, and proof of its effectivity still remains to be further tested and supported by additional research, it seems like a step forward and a potential long-term solution. It is important to remember that the causes of ED vary from man to man and hence, so do the solutions.
Reducing stress, having a healthy diet and exercising regularly can help greatly when it comes to erectile dysfunction issues, as a healthy lifestyle is key to improve if not eliminate the problem. Further, couple’s therapy and psychological help can also play a big role in the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
