Men have more risk of suffering from temperature-related Kidney Stones

October 2, 2017

During the 2017 American Urological Association meeting in Boston, it was stated that men are at a higher risk than women of presenting kidney stones related to high daily temperatures.
The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia conducted a study led by Dr. Gregory E. Tasian, in which they analyzed data from 132,597 patients who presented with kidney stones to emergency departments in South Carolina from 1996 to 2015.
The study determined that daily temperatures at the 99th percentile -using 10 Cº as a reference temperature– increased the risk of stone presentation in 72% amongst men and only 15% for women. The biggest difference was amongst patients between 20 and 65 years old, and public or private insurance didn’t make a significant difference between them.
According to the study, the differences in stone presentations are the result of a sexually dimorphic effect of heat on evaporative water loss instead of greater exposure to ambient temperature. Meaning that patients who live in warmer clients are less prone to present kidney stones, whereas patients living in cold or temperate areas are at a higher risk of presenting kidney stones.
With that in mind, preventive measures are to be taken into account. Leading a healthy lifestyle with a balanced diet that helps you naturally clean your kidneys and improves your bodily functions is crucial. Furthermore, increasing your fluid intake if you live in a cold area will take you a long way when it comes to keeping your kidneys healthy.
Natural cranberry juice on a regular basis and staying hydrated can have a positive impact on your health and help you keep your kidneys free from any potential stones.
